Was
at an event at Bhoomi College yesterday and met this noble soul (Dr
Narayana Reddy) and had the privilige of spending time over breakfast
with him. The conversation was about
growing bangalore, traffic, agriculture etc and arrived at minimalistic
living. Take a look at his shirt on the left arm (circled for
reference). He said, it is a very minimal tear and I don't see any
reason to discard it, it's made from hard earned money, would like to
use it as long as it is useable. People would only want to look at
things like these to make fun of you, but never bog down if you believe
in it, was his message. In that process he narrated an incident
"A lady visited his house to invite him for a wedding ceremony. When she visited his farm, she saw his house etc and started advising him about selling a part of the land and build a good house (bungalow), buy good means of transport (car), buy some good clothes and she went on an on. Dr Reddy was patiently listening to her. After coffee, when she wanted to leave, she was struggling to get up. At this time Dr Reddy said "Madam, I'm 82 now and I have absolutely no problem in sitting, standing, walking and working in fields and you are in your 40's and you are struggling to stand up, please take care of yourself".
So, the Haves and Have Nots should come from with in and should not depend on someone or something else. How true, and every conversation with him brings out so much. Remembering this thought from John Maeda which says "Simplicity is about subtracting the obvious and adding the meaningful"
