Fathers Have Hearts Too

Just because you don't see tears in my eyes

Doesn't mean I haven't struggled through cloudy skies.

Just because you haven't seen my sacrifice

Doesn't mean I've enjoyed working in ties.

Only when you become parents you will realize

That you were the silver lining in my cloudy skies.

There is a vulnerable tenderness within the tough

There is an unseen softness within the rough

There is the toil to give you more than enough

Then it shatters me when you brush me off the cuff

Later as parents you too will do the pretend gruff

And know that on the inside I wasn't really tough.

I celebrated your triumphs but didn't show much

I shouldered your defeats but just showed a touch

When i taught you to bike you pulled the clutch

I took the fall and pretended it didn't hurt enough

I laughed with you through the agonizing pain

You didn't know that I was crying in the rain.

Now as years pass and your dreams come true

In silence I watch the child that has grown into you

I reminisce your first cry as you started life anew

And how it's unfolded into this wonderous panoramic view

As you set sail and create your own crew

Let the waters show that Fathers have hearts too.
